The book concerns lectures given during the History of Urbanism course at the School of Architecture and Society (Territorial Campus of Piacenza) at the Politecnico di Milano.These lectures focused on a city (Amsterdam) and a region (Randstad Holland), where significant experiences were carried out in the fields of urbanism and architecture. Also discussed are some subjects which are of general interest with regard to the history of modern urbanism (CIAM, the Team X, the Internationale Bauausstellung Berlin and the issue of polycentrism).Lorenzo Spagnoli, architect and teacher at the Politecnico di Milano, wrote books on architecture and urbanism in Berlin, Los Angeles,Toronto. He recently published Ri-pensare l'urbanistica (Milano 2003) and Storia dell'urbanistica moderna (2 vol.: Bologna, 2008 and 2012).Adriana Filieri, graduated as an architect from the Politecnico di Milano. She is now studying for a PhD at the University Study of Brescia, Faculty of Engineering (HQ) and at the School of Architecture and Society (Territorial Campus of Piacenza) at the Politecnico di Milano (Partnership) on the topic of the preservation of territories with a low anthropic pressure related to metropolitan area systems. She publishedessays and contributed to books on monographic architects, town planning and urban landscape.
